Skip Permits — Do I Need One?
One of the most common questions we get asked is “Do I need a permit for my skip?” The answer depends on where the skip will be placed.
When you don’t need a permit
If your skip can be positioned entirely on private land, you won’t normally need one. This includes:
- Private driveways
- Gardens or yards
- Private land owned by you or your business
As the skip isn’t on public land, there’s no council permission required, so we can usually arrange delivery sooner.
When you do need a permit
If the skip needs to go on a public highway or other public land, a permit is usually required from the local authority. This typically includes:
- Public roads
- Pavements
- Grass verges
- Footpaths
Each authority has its own process, fees and conditions, which must be met before delivery.
We can arrange it for you
At Fox Group Skip Hire we take care of the permit application on your behalf. We’ll:
- Apply for the necessary highway permit
- Liaise with the relevant local authority
- Arrange delivery once approval is granted
- Make sure the skip is positioned safely and complies with the permit
- Advise if extra safety measures (lights or cones) are needed
Permit fees are set by the local authority and vary by council area.
How it works
- Tell us where you’d like the skip positioned.
- We’ll confirm whether a permit is required.
- If needed, we submit the application to the relevant council.
- Once approved, we arrange delivery on a suitable date.
Allow a few working days for approval where possible, though timescales vary between councils.
Good to know
- Placing the skip on your own driveway avoids the need for a permit.
- The skip must stay in the approved location for the permit period.
- Extending the hire or moving the skip may need further approval.
- Some roads have restrictions that prevent skips being placed there.
Not sure if you need one? Don’t worry, just tell us the delivery address when you book and we’ll advise and arrange everything where necessary.
